Meet Chicago's Velodrome Builder Michael Frauendorff

Way back October 2013 from one of the biggest track events at Velo Sports Center, Hollywood 6-day Cycling Championship, I had the chance to meet one of the founders of South Chicago Velodrome Association, Mr. Emanuele Bianchi. He was very friendly and accommodating as I ask about a photo of their track at its early stages of the build posted on Facebook last 2011. This picture had the USA flag displayed together with UK, Italy and the Philippine flags. I was thinking that there’s got to be a kababayan helping out! Mr. Bianchi mentioned that there were a lot of people who volunteered and as far as he knew, most were not cyclists. Here’s that picture I posted a few years back.

Mr. Bianchi really dug deep in remembering Mr. Michael Frauendorff’s name and that was the start hoping to get a response from him through Facebook’s messaging. I finally got a response early this August. I haven’t really thought about this much lately as I realize that Mike might not be a regular in this social media. But 2 years later, a surprise message from the man himself and here we are now!

Now 45 years old, Mike grew up in Makati and earned a degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of the Philippines back in the 90's. You may wonder as I did how this true Pinoy Pride got his surname, he mentioned that he got it from his great great grandfather who migrated from Germany in the early 1890. Now, that's a story by itself!

During his teenage years in the late 70’s, Mike began riding BMX to include carving a short track at a neighborhood empty lot. That adventure was cut short when the owner of the lot threatened to tie him and his barkadas to one of his banana trees if they continue using his land. In the early 80's, in the height of freestyle BMX, Mike and his friends built a quarter pipe for them to ride on. Youngsters within his neighborhood to as far as Tondo showing up and getting some air time.

That’s him on the ramp! I think this is where Mike hasn’t even realized that building a place for cyclists to ride will be his devotion to his community!

Moving on, Mike’s appreciation for fixed gear cycling began in 1976 when he saw track racing during the Montreal Olympics on TV.  He mentioned that he was in awe in how they climbed the banks of the velodrome and came to a pause before blasting out sprinting to the finish line.

In the ensuing years, he experienced 10-speed road cycling up the mountains of Tagaytay and Antipolo for leisure and watching a leg of the Marlboro Tour of Luzon during the Jacinto Sicam days. He even tried his luck at a Criterium race at the Food Terminal Inc. in Taguig, where he tasted what it’s like to be lapped by Elite riders.

In 1994, Mike moved to Chicago to practice his profession in O.T. and continues on until today. He continued his enjoyment of cycling along the beautiful Lake Shore Drive and later on with a few friends where they rode along the cornfields of Plainfield, Illinois. Here he is with Gil Porsovigan and Gerry Bondoc.

One day in 2011, Mike came upon a velodrome post at Facebook.  He learned about a volunteer call to help build a track at Chicago's Southside. He knew he had to be a part of this volunteer group! Here he is with the far side of the banking support erected…. not even close to halfway into the project!

It was one of the most meaningful things Mike has done, contributing to both a neglected part of Chicago & promoting the sport of track cycling. During the buildup, he was involved with the skeleton supports, cutting of lumber, nailing of the flooring and coping.

Mike mentioned that the hardest task would have been connecting the steel supports together as it included lots of lifting and alignment. His efforts estimated 40 to 80 hours of work in the 90 degree hot and humid summer heat. Here’s a photo of the staff and most of the volunteers who played a major role on what the track is today. You can see Mike at the bottom right wearing a black shirt. Notice how steep the banking is?! Mike mentioned that this is about 50 degrees, more than most indoor wooden velodromes!

Among his highlights of this track build was inviting young citizens of Chicago's Southside who watched from outside the perimeter fences. The joy and excitement on their faces when they got their releases signed by their parents and knowing we were helping rebuild their community was priceless. The other was getting certified to use the track, experiencing the thrill of the steep banking. Wow! Here he is on a selfie!

As Mike mentioned, “it was a pleasure meeting Mr. Emmanuel Bianchi and his team to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime track build. Today, I divide my time between practicing my O.T. profession, raising my 2 kids under 12 with my beautiful wife, Michelle, and spending more time with MTB trail riding”.

Here’s Mike showing off his pride. Notice that the wind picked the Philippine flag perfectly for the photo!

Learn more about South Chicago Velodrome. Visit the track if you get a chance. Check these 2 videos out that’s really worth taking time watching:

Keep an eye at 0:22, you will see a glimpse of Mike. He’s wearing a black shirt rolled up to his chest. The next video is about SCVA with Emmauele Bianchi:

Now I think if someone would stake a piece of land anywhere in the many beautiful islands of the Philippines and if folks will give their precious time volunteering like what Mike did and make a difference for their community. Remember what I mentioned before on what you can do off the saddle?! It's not all about riding and here's proof! Thank you, Michael! Thank you Emmanuele!

Chapter 6. Summary. Olympian Deogracias Asuncion at UCI's 2014 Masters Track Cycling World Championships

Please refer to the month of September for the Prelude and October for Chapters 1-5.

So some may be curious what we did when we were not racing. I just to break it out... there wasn't really anything special here.... no bar crawling, no fish'n chips, no museum visits, no downtown escapades, but there are a lot of standouts cannot be forgotten! Let me start with the unfortunate side and build it up to the brighter side, so here's it is.... Just take these 3 major things into account:

First, evenings in England is morning time in California. Besides yearning for a real 8-10 hour sleep and finding food was as important. Secondly, it was always cold and wet. The sun only shines when the obnoxious thick clouds gives her a chance and that's usually just a few minutes later in the afternoon. Third, the commute was always mystery and trying our best to safely navigate through foreign roads.

Here's our escape route from the hotel:

And loading up in to the mini-minivan!

During our daily commute back to the hotel, finding Asian restaurants or anything else is not as easy as in California... the 3rd hurdle. If you find one, parking is not a given. If you find a takeout place, you only get a baby fork if you ask for a "fork"… yes, it was tiny! Forget the napkins! You're not going to get those! They look at you strangely when you ask for these 2 things… it's a bloody "takeaway" for heaven's sake!  But surprise.. your order comes with a fortune cookie!

Desperation growing, we found a couple of Chow Mein restaurants, first one was near Manchester University campus which was south of the Velodrome and a another one but a takeaway-only place which is a couple of miles west of the hotel in Hale. Add a couple of stops at 2 different McD's, the food place at Asda, and the cafeteria in the velodrome, and that was it! Yep, at least we did found find food within our budget!

Now, just because we had to treat ourselves sometime... we've got to find a Filipino Restaurant at some time right! The craving was somewhat building up, if you know what I mean!

Our taste buds were eager, we spent the time on different days driving about half an hour east to Ashton-under-Lynn to Cora's Restaurant, and …  they were closed but "not" according to the internet! Talking about food problems!

But don't despair as we always endure the night for the hotel's breakfast. So here's the fortunate portion of this story... As I mentioned earlier, lunch and dinner is not too convenient for our taste buds but Chef Bhogs 'Banana' Alves, the hotel's chef at Marriott made our stay worthwhile.

Besides the hotel's breakfast buffet, he prepared lunch for us even a meal for the last night. Deo and I basically will have brunch when he is around. He would also chat with us when he frees up. Hotel chef he is, but he was a long time chef from different cruise liners. This man has traveled the world… amazing! Besides his friendliness, he is very proud of his restaurant staff.

I think he is an asset of the hotel. Beyond that, it was a treat because he also follow Philippine cycling and was very familiar with Deo's prime during the early 80's.

It was a perk seeing my cousin Jason once again. He also brought cookies from Betty's, a must visit Tea House when you get a chance! My only regret was not getting a chance to talk to Dennis Ong of PCC-UK and Mikey Ramirez of FGL. Hopefully there's another chance.

Remember Mark Altamirano! He was Steve Pelaez's manager during 2008 UCI Track World Cup in Los Angeles. He competed also!

Naturally, we had some time to roam around the track, savor and soak all the prestige and history this building can offer. To get started, here's the front entrance to the velodrome..

Most of the days, we park and go through the back entrance. Here's the smiling Shoulin Mastah!

Look at these collections though UK's Track Cycling history!

Check out these pics from around the Velodrome: Here's the hallway to the different offices different from the offices around the lobby with Chris Hoy's picture on the wall.

Yes, the moment is yours upon entering the track through the infield.

Hopefully you've seen the pics I posted in Facebook while we were there. There are a few more, I just couldn't fit them most of them in this story. On top of that, There are many pics of UK's superstars to include Chris Boardman, Bradly Wiggins and Mark Cavendish to name a few. Here's Chris Hoy against SoCal's Jimmy Watkins...

If you recall, I mentioned in the previous chapter that Deo started to have symptoms of flu on the second day of racing. We were just fortunate that we had 2 days of rest in between. We don't realize having cold sweats and runny nose while in the velodrome but clears out a few minutes after we have left the building. My hunch could be the stagnant cold air.

Here's the view from atop turns 1/2..

At least we were feeling better and rested when we returned for his 3rd race. But I noticed the same symptoms back once again. I think we were just fortunate that the Finals of the Points Race was move to the schedule of Heat 1. Speaking of the bug floating around, there were 2 from his 3rd race that just crashed on their own rumored having the bug. Right off, once Deo was rested we jetted out of the Velodrome! I think I started feeling sick that day.

Recapping the event, here's the final results from 22 countries who participated with USA finishing 2nd place in the tally:

Special thanks to Mr. Ian Emmerson of UCI Cycling Masters, the staff of the National Cycling Centre who spearheaded and organized this successful event. Photo copied from their FB page.
