USAC Permit 2013-3230 (Part 4) - A Historic Event! The Finest Philippine Hour There Is!

Can you believe I made this post into 4 parts! Some probably noticed how long this story was when I first posted it. I think dividing it up gives more justice to what just happened... Finally...

A one-of-a-kind event like this surely attracted media and news interviews!
(For some reason the videos from YouTube does not show up to get linked)
Please click the links to view them. Thanks.

and by

Thank for our media crews: Steve Angeles, Balitang America, ABS-CBN, Chris Tronsden, Pacific Rim Velo, Jannelle So, and Kababayan Today for interviewing Arland, showcasing, and broadcasting this event.

Special thanks to Brian Masayon, Noriel Simcuangco, and Greg Uy of Fil-Am Tri Club. They are our relentless event coordinators. I hope they didn't get tired of me!

Invitations were sent out as far we could, Fil-Am Cycling Clubs in the area, San Diego, and Northern California, Texas, friends in Hawaii, East Coast region, UK, France, Italy, Dubai, friends in Singapore, Australia, and naturally in the Philippines. This also includes Fil-Am and Philippine’s fixed gear-enthusiast groups that we can reach out to. I hate to mention but Facebook really played a big role of connecting us up!

The crowds were terrific! Our officials attested that they had fun too!
This is proof! Give me a high TEN!

Just to let everyone in of what’s in store for the future…. how about another national record attempt next year again?! How about getting the Philippine Track Team to travel and race at UCI’s Los Angeles Grand Prix this November?! How about a “Flying-lap” event in the plans from my cycling friends in Australia?! They even want me to sample my sprint later this year and create their own track records! Wow! I’m just amazed! In addition, my Ironfly teammate Mark Neumann will also attempt an hour record very soon!

In addition, the extra funds gathered from this event were arranged for Arland’s friend and Tri-athlete Joash Serrano who was in dire need of a kidney transplant. We hope the little help gathered will count a lot for his surgery. Get well Joash! We need you back competing once again!

There are so many thank you's and a few repeated ones! Without ALL of you, I don't think we will be able to pull this event off the charts! We broke new grounds and made history that day!

Most of all, Arland's family… Twinkle and Miles who were cheering from home far away; and mine... Trelly and my grown-up kids for their support for both of us in our passion for this sport of cycling!

There are so many “first” made during this event. We pioneered the first 1-hour track record in Asia! We truly broke new grounds that Sunday!

This will be a day to remember for Philippine Track Cycling! Thank you for trusting me orchestrate this historic feat!

Thank you all and congratulations, Arland!

USAC Permit 2013-3230 (Part 3) - Arland Macasieb To Make History!

Now it's time for Arland Macasieb to shine!

Arland's first time on the track was just 5 days before and after a day he arrived. Coach Kevin Phillips was there for him. Arland was very surprised how difficult it was to keep up with the pace given that he only had a limited time to warmup. He also had difficulty with the banking. He mentioned that it felt like riding on a wall! But no worries, as the limited days progressed, he adjusted really well and looked very promising.

Here are just a few of the great action shots by John Salangsang of John Photography and more professional shots by Gus Sarmiento, Roehl Rosales, and a few more for sure.

The day came, the moment Arland, myself, and everyone were waiting for... He was set...

and ready to go!

This is a classic!

Arland was timed faster on his second half of his attempt.

A photo to remember! Philippine flag looking over Arland!

WELL DONE, ARLAND! YOU JUST MADE HISTORY!

After the long day and 162 laps later.... still all smiles!

Here are our officials making sure all the laps are accounted for after Arland crossed the finish line.

And finally after he can stand up and walk again!
Arland getting together with his friends and supporters!

Let's continue on to Part 4 to close this special day....

USAC Permit 2013-3230 (Part 2) - An Opportunity I Won't Make A Pass On.

It’s hard to not include my low key USA Masters 45-49 Flying 250-meters sprint National Record breaking attempt. As some knows the story behind how this came about and how it became a serious business are amazing in their own respect. You can find my insights about this whole thing in a post I did last August 18th at Pinoy Fixie’s Facebook Group. This attempt was an opportunity I won’t make a pass on and my first time making such a thing like this.

The photo above was taken just before I headed out for my attempt and the lap before the sprint (below). This is one of the moments I've been waiting for and cannot retreat anymore!

I will never forget the help and mentoring I received from Louie Rivera, Pete Maharaj, Kevin Phillips, Gil Mangabat, Gibby Hatton, and Arland himself. Even Philippine Team track racer Apryl Eppinger and Malaysia’s Olympian and Champion Josiah Ng were aware of my crazy plan. My greatest confidants: Bill Stevenson, Martin Vickers, Alan Dudley, and Mark Neumann. I am so glad you were all there and thank you for the incentive! You know it’s my trophy that only a few will taste! (below) Finally crossing the finish line! I can't forget how painful it was from the start to the finish of my sprint!

The National Record to beat was 14.688 seconds @ 61.275 kph. It was set by Dave Brinton, an accomplished world class level cyclist. He set the new record last 9th of August 2013 in this same velodrome on an International Omnium during the Elite States Track National Championships. The permit of our event was approved a week before that. The previous record was 16.794 seconds held by Christian Reinke last August 2012 at South Carolina’s Rock Hill Velodrome. This was the record time I beat days earlier at 15.6 seconds with the help of Louie Rivera and Gil Mangabat during practice. Were were so happy of the outcome since I was just on training setup the whole time. All we had to do is to rehearse and experiment on the gearing.

Just to cut the story short, I was not able to beat the record. That last lap sprint felt like I was in slow motion and so painful that I knew I will cross the finish line with the slowest time I will ever know. To my amazement, it was still in my range at 15.6 seconds and I was happy with it. Did I just mention how painful it was?!

Special mention to the Meatheads of South Bay Wheelmen: Masters Track World Cup Cyclist Jim Kloss with the great support of wife Carol, Charles Watson, Steve Whitsitt, Dairo Moody, National Record Holder Kurt Sato, Tom Buescher, Melanie Peterson, and our former Coach Mark Whitehead (deceased). All heavily experienced from the annual National Track Masters Championship events held at different velodromes nationwide and SCNCA State Track Masters Championship events from all 3 velodromes in Southern California. I don’t think I’ll get to this level without this amazing group of old school trackies that I truly embrace.

Here's a really cool photo of the change of hands with Arland set to make history!

Now it's his turn...

USAC Permit 2013-3230 (Part 1) - An Event to Remember!

The 15th of September 2013, Sunday was indeed a great day for Philippine Track Cycling! As most knows by now, Fil-Am Tri CEO and Ironman Elite Arland Macasieb has successfully set the bar for the most distance covered in one hour on this world class velodrome now called Velo Sports Center. Arland officially reached 162 laps or 40 kilometers and 405 meters after 60 minutes of pursuit. This one-of-a-kind velodrome (formerly ADT Event Center) is located in Carson, California, spec’ed at 45-degrees maximum banking, 250-meters, wooden indoor track per Fixed Gear Fever website. This is the same velodrome our ’84 Olympian Deogracias Asuncion made his comeback and the first Pinoy to represent our flag at UCI’s Track World Cup in 2007; followed by Steve Pelaez and Victor Espiritu during the 2008 World Cup; a few USAC Juniors and Elite Track State and National Championships by Coryn Rivera, Mary ‘Lala’ Glenn Enrique and Steve Pelaez; and Tony Zaldua Jr. and Christina Ricafort during SCNCA State Masters Track Championships in 2010. This is also Coryn’s home track and won a whole lot of racing during her junior years.

We are fortunate enough to get a response from Asian Cycling Confederation confirming that a 1-hour time trial record Asian Record does NOT exist at the time of our inquiry. Unfortunately they cannot recognize this particular discipline even if under guidance of UCI. Unofficially, we can say that Arland Macasieb is the pioneer and now holds the very first Asian 1-hour record from the same attempt!

I believe this is the first time a Philippine Cycling Record was set in mainland USA! This feat won’t be possible without the enthusiasm and helpfulness of so many people, not only from the track cycling community and in the Philippines and Los Angeles but also from Filipino cycling communities around the world. There are so many people from all walks of life that were involved and we would like to thank each and everyone of you.

First, we would like to thank our USA Cycling Officials Heather and John Allen, UCI Commissaire Carla Geyer, and Timing System Specialist / USA Cycling Official Robert Pelegrin, Velo Sports Center (VSC) Manager and Olympian Adam Duvendeck, and Los Angeles Velodrome Racing Association (LAVRA) Race Director Christopher Reed for the great job they do. I have been acquainted with these great people for quite some time now but I never dealt with them on a project like this before! Thank you for working with me on making this memorable and one-of-a-kind event happen. Please check us out at Velo Sport Center’s VSC Weekly Fixed Newsletter dated September 16-22, 2013.

Arland's event poster was posted as far as we could reach out to and the skinsuit he wore on this historic ride were both designed and coordinated by Brian Masayon, John Landino, Richwood Borja, and David Sempier.

Our financial sponsors who has helped tremendously on our expenses: Claremont Designs, Optimum Care Therapy, Adobo Velo Fil-Am Cycling Club, Activentures, and A'Runners Circle. Teaming up for the technical aspect of Arland’s successful ride are Kevin Phillips of Ironfly, Tony Zaldua Jr. of Inertia Racing Technology, Louie Rivera, and naturally, Pinoy Fixie.

For those who witnessed his attempt, did you notice how quiet Arland’s bike was? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I can attest that it was! That quietness equates to less friction, which relates to a “fast bike”! Give that credit to master mechanic, IRT wheel builder, and State Champion himself, Mr. Tony Zaldua Jr.! Here's the magician at work!

Our Coaches and Mentors: Ironfly lead and 2 National Records holder Kevin Phillips; Trinidad and Tobago’s Olympic and World Cup Track Sprint Coach Peter Maharaj; Keirin Master, Coach and World Champion and my former Coach Gibby Hatton; and USA Cycling Official Robert Pelegrin. Fil-Am Cycling Community / PhilCycling consultants: Olympian Deogracias Asuncion; Philippine Team Track Cyclists Wilson Blas and Steve Pelaez; and Louie Rivera. Special mention to newly Certified UCI Coach Virgilio Espiritu and Officers of Philippine Cycling / Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines: President Abraham Tolentino and Executive Director Jojo Villa Jr. who helped us from the beginning phases of the project. Special thanks to Atty. Billy Sumagui for the immediate posts of the event and results at PhilCycling. Who would think that both USAC and PhilCycling logos will end up together in an event like this?! This is the first for cycling history!

The very important warm-up paceline crew: Red Hook and Wolf Pack participant Langdon Taguiped, Ironman Jim Torii, Donnie Marquez of Big Orange, and Louie Rivera of South Bay Wheelmen. Without them, we will be weary about getting settled in on the track surface. Great photo of the all-Pinoy paceline that caught the Philippine flag above. Another first!

How about our National Anthem acapella singers: VSC National Anthem Singer Cristina Ricafort serenading us with our Bayang Magiliw, heard in this arena for the first time!

And American Idol singer Clint Gamboa hitting the high notes of our US National Anthem!

Wonderful work by Event Announcer and former ABS-CBN talent JR Calanoc!

Another first in cycling history! Cristina, Clint, and JR did a terrific job! Thank you!

Just to get to this point of the event is an accomplishment by itself. There were many things that happened that day that it I decided to put the story in 4 parts. Next will be my attempt to break the National Record for the Masters 45-49 Flying 250-meter time trial....

Danilo Dizon Jr. and special friends at Italy's Stelvio Bike Day

Typical fixie and trackies hates hills but why miss one of the greatest cycling events in Italy... Giro d'Italia dubbed Stelvio Pass as cycling's killer climb. A little more than 200 kilometers Northeast of Milan. This last day of August is Stelvio Bike Day. An open cycle tour, no charge, an unforgettable event, breathtaking mountain scenery, and the road to the top closed to traffic!

Many cyclists consider Stelvio Pass scenically the nicest of all the Alpine Passes. It is possible to climb the Stelvio from two different sides or base of the Pass: from Lombardy, locals call it Lombardia, and Bormio at 1,200 meters elevation which Dan and his friends took, and also from Prato and South Tyrol, both in Italy. However, it is also possible to reach the Stelvio from Santa Maria in Switzerland in the west. The toughest and the most spectacular climbing is the one from Prato, with 48 hairpins. Starting from Prato, Stelvio Pass is 24.3 kilometers long. Over this distance, you climb 1,808 meters or just peaking at 6,000 feet. The average percentage is thus 7.5% straight to the top and a maximum of about 13%, topping Stelvio at 2,728 meters! This Pass is known for large SUVs to back up and maneuver to make it around some of the sharp hairpin turns. It's just not practical for modern trucks to use. The Pass is usually closed between October and May. What makes this Pass so famous is that about half of the climb is above tree level and can be seen from above, making for a very powerful and dramatic sight. Stelvio is just legendary. There are no flat places on the Stelvio, somewhere a person can keep riding and get a bit of rest! Check out Bike Race Info for an interesting read. How Stelvio came about also finds it very fascinating for me!

I remember Dan was still building his new road bike a few months ago and now was confident to ride it hard, up these intimidating switchbacks, and then back down wearing off those brake pads and heating up the rims. He mentioned that he uses a compact crankset 50/34 and with a 11-28 cassette. With this climb, you wanna make a bet which chainring/cog combination he used?!

He and his close friends Sonny and Sean Santiago, his Italian friend Sante Bagnara, and mentor Renato 'Ka Reny' Cataran were ready to climb when he messaged.... that was just before midnight at my side of the world. By the way, except for mentor Ka Reny, this was their first time to climb this killer mountain! Brave men! Reny climb this behemoth last June during the Grand Fondo! It was snowy and windy that day... just a bad day as Ka Reny mentioned to him! So I had to ask, where else did you all climb? And hoping that this was in preparation for the event! He mentioned... Madonna del Ghisallo (from Erba and also from Bellagio kung saan mas mahirap), Colma di Sormano, Brunate, and Colle Brianza. HELLO!!! My inquiring stopped in it's tracks... the notorious Alps is just in their neighborhood, you know! Why should I even check Google maps, right?! He said it... and I'll just take it!

I checked my messages again early this morning and I saw his computer results. Not just the climb all done but the ride was finished and was probably driving home all tired.

Finally, here's his proof that he and his close friends reached the top of Stelvio Pass... with a BIG smile!

According to Stilfser Joch Cycling Day website, there were 7,500 cyclists went up to the Stelvio Pass from the South-Tyrolian side of Italy, Prato and another 1,800 went up from Lombardia to take the Bormio route (check the website for more pictures). The event was very festive and I won't be surprised if it added to at least ten thousand cyclists! Congratulations to you all! What an accomplishment! Here's more BIG smiles from everyone!

Yes we know that reaching the top also means going back down to get home, right! The rewards.... the fruit of labor... will be fast and furious... and done in a fraction of the time they spent climbing the switchbacks!

Here's a great shot of Dan carefully manhandling Stelvio on the return trip!

The Pinoys have conquered Stelvio Pass... and the second for Ka Reny! The next cycling day: Saturday 30th August 2014. But before that, they plan to participate at Sella Ronda in two weeks... September 15th! Same day as Arland's Philippine record setting event!

Congratulations to Nino Surban for his First Place Open Category win in yesterday's Iskandar Megaride 2013 Nusajaya Johor Cross Country Marathon.

There were about 50+ Pinoy riders who joined him in this race and we would like to see Nino once again in future races in Johor. He is the Open Category Winner from the Philippines. Great job Pinoy! Owen Soriano must be very proud to know this.

Christina Ricafort, Tony Zaldua Jr., and Wilson Blas at 2013 SCNCA State Masters Track Championships

One of the very anticipated annual 2-day track event of Southern California Nevada Cycling Association (SCNCA), Masters States Track Championships! Held just 2 weekends ago at Encino Velodrome in Los Angeles, California. Fixed Gear Fever noted this concrete velodrome as 252 meters with 30 degrees of maximum banking. We were well represented by Christina Ricafort, Tony Zaldua Jr., his brother James Zaldua and Wilson Blas in their respective age groups.

Remember Christina Ricafort? She was that singer hitting the high notes of the National Anthem during last year's USAC Elite Track National Championships! She's been a roadie for a while now but got into track cycling for a year or so. She learned the track fast and well.... and look at her now. She is now a SCNCA Champion! The photo below was from the 3-km Team Pursuit with team mates Melanie Phillips and Jan Palchikoff with a winning time of 4:35:85 earning the Gold Medal!

Here Christina is grinding it out during the 2-km Individual Time Trial finishing with a time of 3:06:98 for 2nd place earning the Silver medal!

Moving on to Tony Zaldua Jr..... Do you notice the 2 medals he's wearing? Both medals were awarded during the morning of Day 1! He earned them from 1-km Individual Time Trial with a time of 1:13:56 for the Silver medal and Team Sprint with teammates Shon Halasi and Joe Camacho.with a time of 55:.49 seconds for the Gold medal.

He came back again in the afternoon session with team mates David Brinton, Dominic Clark, and Scott Evans for the 4-km Team Pursuit. They clocked in at a time 5:14:68 to finish first place for the Gold medal! Below is a picture from his supportive brother and fixed-gear cyclist James Zaldua!

But Tony wasn't done yet! He was back at the track on the afternoon of Day 2 to compete at the 10-km Scratch Race and 20-km Points Race finishing 2nd place for another Silver Medal and 1st place for the another Gold medal respectively.

A total of 3 Gold medals and 2 Silver medals from 5 races he signed up for. This Champion shows consistency year after year!

Last but not least, Wilson Blas also raced the 1-km Individual Time Trial with a time of 1:13:34, finishing second for the Silver medal. Missing only a second for the Gold! Here he is ready for his Kilo.

So who got the Gold? Who did he compete against for the Championship? Here's Wilson at the podium with Jon Davy. Yes, Wilson was up against a much bigger and stronger competitor.... and only lost it by 1 second!

But he wasn't done yet! He was back at the track on the afternoon of Day 2 to compete at the 10-km Scratch Race and 25-km Points Race finishing 2nd place on both races for a couple more Silver medals. You probably know by now who he was up against! He earned a total of 3 Silver medals!

Let's all congratulate Christina, Tony, and Wilson for all the hard work they did!

Meet Italy's Fixed-Gear Cyclist Danilo Dizon Jr.

Hello to all Pinoy Fixie viewers once again! Please meet Danilo Dizon Jr., one of our special Pinoy fixed-gear cyclists.... born in Italy in 1991 and lived briefly in the Philippines in his earlier years before travelling back with his parents and sister to Pordenone Province, northeast of Italy. Unknown by most, Filipinos is the largest alien resident group in the country per Wikipedia, During Dan’s early years, he usually rides his bike to school, for grocery runs, and to visit friends to name a few. They later moved to Milan which 350 kilometers west of Pordenone and graduated in 2009 with a Degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering at ITIS Giovanni Giorgi College. He now works at Abercrombie & Fitch Co., Milan’s flagship store of the specialty clothing retailer. He also works at the renowned aquarium shop in Milan called Yato Aquari where they install and maintain marine and fresh water aquariums. Fortunately, aquascaping is one of his hobbies. Amazingly, after all these years, he still learned his native tongue, good in English, and can whip his Italian lingo anytime and anywhere!

To get started about Dan’s cycling world, he is one of the founders of Milan’s Filipino Fixed-Gear Cycling Club named Pinoy Heavy Pedal  that is now about 50 members strong! He is proud to mention his co-founders: Sonny and Sean Santiago, Nico Benito, Jonathan Batoctoy, and Aldrin Delos Angeles.

Eventually, he started training at Parco Nord Velodrome, 497-meter long and made of asphalt…. The local cyclists call it the mini-velodrome not because of the length but because of the minimal banking.  This is where he got hooked on track riding. Check this video he recorded with his friends Fabio and Lorenzo, and you’ll know what I’m talking about. Titled: Velodromo "DateciPista" Parco Nord Bresso. That gathering was organized by a group of volunteers called "Dateci Pista", meaning is "Give Us Track"!

Not too soon, Italy’s “Fixed Forum” organized an event and rented Montichiari Velodrome for 3 different days. He was able to go to the 2nd and 3rd days and experienced riding the track with about 40 other cyclists.  He mentioned that it was crazy!

This velodrome is spec’ed at 250-meters long, 43-degree banking, wood surface, indoor facility which is very different than Parco Nord. This is where Dan fell in love with track riding. For the next few weeks, his group of friends traveled to the track whether it rained or snowed. It was just the cost of travelling 114 kilometers to the velodrome that got in the way.

Most of the time, he rides from home to Martesana Pista Ciclabile which can be a 100+ kilometer bike ride without any cars along the way. He mentioned that Martesana is roughly 30 kilometers west from his home but the ride distance can be varied to create more challenges.

Now we think that these are the only two velodromes he’s been to…. What surprised me was that he’s been to a few more! That’s an impressive statement from a mild mannered fixed gear cyclist. So I had to ask, which velodromes have you visited?! He mentioned five more… Roberto Battaglia Communal Velodrome in Busto Garolfo, Giuliano Pacciarelli Velodrome in Fiorenzuola d’Arda, Dalmine Communal Velodrome in Dalmine, Vigorelli Velodrome (defunct) in Milano/Milan, and Fausto Coppi (TO) Velodrome (also defunct) in Torino / Turin, Italy - aka Moto Velodromo. Hopefully you can just imagine the efforts he has to go through to get to all these velodromes! You can find details of all these velodromes he’s been to on the right side of this blog.  Just by being at these different velodromes especially in Italy, as one of the premier countries in cycling, we cannot disregard what he knows about velodromes. Even if he hasn't competed in track racing, he knows something most of us are not aware of.

So who is his mentor behind all these? He is proud to mention his friend Nicholas Varani, and Italian/Swiss all-around cyclist. Nicholas mentors Dan on track riding skills and also about bike parts. If you are following Red Hook Criterium in Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York, Nicholas of Iride Fixed Modena Team travelled to compete there! Now that’s dedication to the sport! Our Pinoy Fixie member Langdon Taguiped of Los Angeles also travelled there to race!

Last but not least, Dan is very thankful of his friend in Manila, Ian Oliver Atendido. Ian was very kind to lend his Ave Maldea fixed-gear bike while he was on vacation last month.

You can follow Dan in Facebook where he usually visits Manila Fixed Gear Group.

National Games at Amoranto Velodrome on May 28 - 29, 2013 - Summary (Part 4)

The calm before National Games 2013 (photo by Gilbert Sy Chan)....

There are a lot's of pictures posted in Facebook by Virgilio Espiritu, Gilbert Sy Chan, Mark Dumandan, Leo Dino, Mark Cristino, and Jojo Villa to name a few. Thank you for sharing! There are more photos at PhilCycling and Manila Fixed Gear's Facebook Group. Don't forget to visit WeFxd's blog, MFG's blog and Mark Dumandan's post about the track event. Special thanks to the event organizers for having MFG and WeFxd some track time during the event.

Start of a Keirin Race. Photo courtesy by Mark Dumandan. And below are the awards Alfie Catalan earned.

I didn't see much about Day 2 - Olympic Event but I assume it was also a great day at the track! And because of everyone's response, this resulted to a proposal for future track events:

Personally, the race results of the 2-day event are great but what really matters is as long as we continue with the spirit, learn from our experiences, and perfect it time and time again and eventually get the respect at a World Class level. Seeing Juniors ride the track was also a delight! Hopefully, the proposal for future events is a promising start and let's all hope it goes a long way. Once again, it's also a matter of volunteering, help maintain the facilities, and a lot of training.... racing is just the creme of the crop of all those hard work.

Thank you Race Director Jose 'Jojo' Villa Jr., to all the staffs and volunteers that made it all happen! Thank you also to all the trackies, coaches, and everyone who participated in the event. Congratulations to all the winners. I really appreciate Kiko Escora of Manila Fixed Gear and Leo Dino of WeFxd for helping get the word out. And for Erickson Bautista of Mashin'Manila for linking Pinoy Fixie Blog.

National Games at Amoranto Velodrome on May 28 - 29, 2013 - Schedule of Events (Part 2)
